Project Spotlight at YULCOM: The “BAnQ in Your Classroom” Platform
Digital technologies serving education, culture, and the history of Québec.
YULCOM is proud to have contributed to the development of the BAnQ in Your Classroom platform, a digital initiative designed to provide easier access to Québec’s rich historical heritage.
Developed by Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ), this educational platform features the “Québec Timelines” exploration mode; an innovative pedagogical tool that makes the province’s history more accessible, engaging, and interactive for both students and educators.
BAnQ Education, accessible at https://www.banq.qc.ca/education/, serves as the gateway to BAnQ’s full educational ecosystem. The site brings together a wide range of learning resources tailored to the needs of the academic community.
The platform also includes a dedicated Teacher Space, designed to support educators in integrating BAnQ’s digital resources into their classrooms. Its objective is to promote and showcase Québec’s documentary heritage through diverse learning pathways; chronological, thematic, and geographic.
This digital resource offers a comprehensive historical repository, covering key moments in Québec’s history; from the era of Jacques Cartier’s explorations to the turn of the 21st century.
Key features of the platform include:
- Exploration of over 500 major historical events across multiple learning domains, enabling intuitive thematic navigation for both teachers and students
- Access to rich historical documentation, with each event presented as a detailed record supported by primary sources such as period texts, maps, engravings, and visual materials
- Advanced search tools, including keyword search, category filters, historical periods (from origins to present day), and Québec’s administrative regions
Users can explore landmark events such as Jacques Cartier’s arrival in 1534 and the founding of Montréal in 1642, as well as major cultural, political, economic, and social transformations.
The platform also enables users to explore history through geography using an interactive map. This feature allows discovery of cultural assets based on their location across Québec and supports regional searches in areas such as Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Nord-du-Québec, and Montréal.
In addition, the platform promotes an inclusive pedagogical approach by incorporating diverse perspectives on Québec’s history, with the goal of including, over time, the voices and histories of the 11 First Nations and the Inuit.
