Dr. Marta Kersten-Oertel, PhD, brings over 10 years of experience in the health technology and artificial intelligence sectors. Currently, Dr. Marta Kersten-Oertel is an Associate Professor and holds the Research Chair in Applied Perception at Concordia University.

She serves as the associate editor of Taylor & Francis journal, Computer Assisted Surgery, and is a board member of the International Society of Computer Assisted Surgery. Her extensive collaboration network includes researchers from Concordia, McGill, ÉTS, University Health Network Toronto, Brigham & Women’s Hospital, University of Rennes (France), and Universitätsklinikum Erlangen (Germany). Her dedication to research and teaching, coupled with her recognition as the Research Chair holder, highlights her influence in the field of applied perception.
Dr. Marta Kersten-Oertel’s research focuses on the development and testing of visualization, display, and interaction methods in the context of image-guided surgery. Her passion for enhancing spatial understanding and depth of medical data, along with her keen interest in the impact of augmented reality visualization in specific surgical tasks, makes her a key figure in the field.
With diverse experience in computer-assisted surgery, augmented reality, medical imaging, medical devices, visualization, human-machine interaction, and computer graphics, Dr. Marta Kersten-Oertel earned her Ph.D. with a focus on various visualization techniques, including augmented reality for guiding neurovascular surgery.
She specializes in developing new software tools and interfaces, smartphone applications, and AI algorithms for clinical and health applications. In the field of AI, she has developed federated learning approaches to achieve robust machine learning models without sharing data (resulting in a patented work in federated learning). To date, she has secured over $2 million in funding (including $1 million as the principal investigator) and authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, as well as delivered invited presentations worldwide, including 8 international invited talks.
